The place for sports and leisure – in the heart of Belmont!
The second stage of major development by CIYMS was completed in February 2006. Following the up-grading and extension of the outdoor facilities a new pavilion designed with a bright and contemporary feel by architects Ferguson McIlveen was handed over on time and within budget by Antrim-based builders Reynolds and Bennett.
The principle aim of the Society, which has been in existence since 1850, is to encourage good citizenship through sporting, cultural and social activity. The new facilities create a first class environment to further this aim. After taking part in or watching one of the many activities of the Society, members and visitors can relax in the comfort of the Members Room or on the stylish terrace overlooking the spacious grounds.
Outdoor sporting facilities include rugby, tennis, cricket, hockey and athletics. Badminton, squash and indoor bowling, bridge, chess, and drama (the Clarence Players) take place indoors and a new fitness suite including a range of ‘Technogym’ cardio-vascular fitness equipment was opened in May 2006. Membership of the sections engaged in each activity is open to anyone regardless of age, gender or religious affiliation who subscribes to the principal aim. Young members in particular are encouraged by coaching programmes in mini-rugby, hockey, tennis and cricket. Associate membership unconnected with any specific activity is also available. It is hoped that the superb facilities now on offer will attract many new members.
